Number Systems & Operations

The first mini-course in the ANDE sequence: Number Systems & Operations

Goal

ANDE Basecamp, the first of four ANDE mini-courses, launches learners on the path to building solid foundational skills using and understanding rational numbers, number systems, and operations.

Course Overview

For Instructors

ANDE Basecamp engages adult learners in exploring rational numbers and number systems through group learning and real-life examples. Learners build confidence as they interpret, represent, and apply rational numbers to everyday decisions, giving them a strong foundation for future math studies and GED preparation.

General Audience

  • Aligns with GED domains and College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) at NRS Levels 3 & 4 (grades 6–8), and written for clarity and accessibility, meeting a Flesch Reading Ease score of 60–70 (grades 7–9);
  • Focuses on conceptual understanding–grasping the meaning, not just the steps of a math solution; and
  • Emphasizes peer discussion, contextual problem-solving, and the use of visual models like number lines and coordinate planes to deepen learning.

Lesson Overview

ANDE basecamp contains 8 units:
  1. Comparing & Locating Rational Numbers: Build confidence in identifying and positioning rational numbers on number lines.
  2. Understanding Absolute Value & Order: Explore concepts of value, magnitude, and sequence.
  3. Navigating the Coordinate Plane: Learn to plot and interpret points in real-world scenarios.
  4. Representing Integer Operations: Use number lines and equations to understand addition and subtraction with integers.
  5. Applying Decimal Operations (Budgeting): Practice operations with decimals by working through budgeting scenarios.
  6. Multiplication & Division of Signed Numbers: Gain fluency with positive and negative numbers in various contexts.
  7. Four Operations with Rational Numbers: Solve problems using all four operations in both math and everyday situations.
  8. Estimation & Checking Calculations: Develop strategies for estimating and verifying answers for accuracy.
