ANDE OER: ascent

Goal

ANDE Ascent, the second mini-course, guides adult learners upward as they build their knowledge and skills with proportional reasoning, using real-world scenarios like shopping, calculating percentages, and reading scale drawings.

Course Overview

Through collaborative, discussion-driven lessons, ANDE Ascent helps learners gain confidence working with ratios, rates, and percentages, and build skills they can use to solve everyday problems.

Aligned with NRS Levels 3 & 4 and CCRS Levels C–D (grades 6–8), and written for clarity and accessibility, meeting a Flesch Reading Ease score of 60–70 (grades 7–9);
Builds the skills needed to compare quantities, make smart decisions, and calculate percent changes in real-life contexts; and
Focuses on collaborative learning, discussion, and hands-on problem-solving.

Lesson Overview

ANDE ascent contains 8 units:

Exploring Unit Rates: Understand how unit rates work and where they appear in daily life.
Identifying Proportional Relationships: Learn to spot and use proportional relationships in practical contexts.
Calculating Percent Increases and Decreases: Figure out changes in percentage in everyday scenarios.
Working with Scale: Apply scale to interpret drawings and maps.
Using Tables and Graphs: Use visual tools to compare quantities and solve problems.
Modeling with Tape Diagrams & Double Number Lines: Build fluency representing and solving problems visually.
Making Informed Decisions: Use math skills to compare options and make confident choices.
Applying What You’ve Learned: Bring together your new skills in real-life problem-solving tasks.
